Trees are a valuable asset to the urban area.

What do they do for us?

Trees absorb carbon dioxide and other gases from our air.

Trees act as a natural air conditioner by intercepting the sun and shading our environment.

Trees provide privacy and screening from noise, wind and unpleasant views.

Trees provide food and habitat for wildlife and birds

Trees provide beauty all year long

Trees in urban areas need care that trees in a forest may not require. Urban trees live in a very harsh conditions in close proximity to human activities. The soil that they grow in is often compacted and lacks required nutrients and organic matter. Humans frequently encroach upon trees’ growing space with houses, roads and hard landscaping. Humans can injure trees with poor pruning and lack of protection from human activities.

Can urban trees live for a century or more? Yes.

Can you help your trees grow to reach their maximum potential in longevity and beauty? Yes.

What can you do to help your trees?

Prune Your Trees

Water Your Trees

The Toronto area has been experiencing severe droughts over the past several summers. A lack of water in a tree’s root system will cause extreme stress to a tree resulting in leaf scorch and death, root death and increased susceptibility to insects and disease. Trees should receive at least 1 inch of rain per week, either natural rainfall or through irrigation. You should provide this amount of water within a few hours. Avoid watering more than once a week as this may cause soil saturation and oxygen deprivation to the roots.
