About Mark Carroll:

I have a wide variety of work experiences. I am most proud of my work within the natural environment. Working out of the Rouge Valley Conservation Centre in eastern Toronto as a project coordinator, I was able to be involved the in planning and implementing of a wide range of environmental enhancement opportunities. I have implemented the planting of more than 50,000 trees, erected a little more than 400 wildlife habitats and been involved in the protection of 10,000 hectares of environmentally significant lands throughout the GTA. I have worked alongside more than 6000 school children and 2000 residents of the GTA to achieve these mile stones and more.

In 2008 I had the opportunity to take a job in the arboriculture field. Starting out in the moving of large caliber trees with Tree spades, I moved over to the tree care side shortly after. Dragging brush and learning how to care for trees appealed to me. It wasn’t until I attended my first Tree Climbing Competition in 2008 that I knew that this was what I wanted to do for a career.

With the owners of Kelly’s Tree Care I have had the opportunity to attend Humber College in the Arboriculture Classes and received my diploma at the top of my class in 2010. I have been sponsored by Kelly’s to receive my certificate from the Province of Ontario, promoting me as an Ontario Qualified Arborist. Kelly’s Tree Care has also sponsored me to compete in the last three annual Ontario Tree Climbing Competitions. I am now a lead climber with Kelly’s Tree Care.

I have continued my experience with working alongside some of the most knowledgeable and experienced Arborists in the industry. I have not only attended the past 4 annual Tree Climbing Competitions, but I have also competed in the last 3. Being the oldest to compete, I do it not to win, but to advance my skills as an arborist and to have some fun with the best tree climbers in the business.

This year I am proud to be working along with my youngest daughter Jennifer. She is now learning the business with Kelly’s and attending the Arboriculture Classes at Humber College as I did. Jennifer and I also have an Ontario first under our belts. Jennifer and I are the first Farther/Daughter combination to compete at the Ontario Tree Climbing Competition in 2011. Jennifer did quite well for her first time. A chip off the old block…

I currently work as a Volunteer Fire Fighter with the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville. I have been with the service for 8 years and it is the other career that I enjoy. Helping out in my community has been my life’s work. Whether it is fighting fires, helping people when they are most vulnerable, or just helping out in my community at community events, I do my best.

Whether it is the pruning trees or fighting fires, I have careers that are both challenging and rewarding.
